Guess this goes back to my schooldays when Charles Dickens was for teens to read by torchlight under the bed blankets in cold all too often damp England.

USA too. For weren't folks taken with familys' need of explaining their pre-Victorian forbears.

Also Australia, New Zealand. Indeed most (at the time of Dickens's life) what the British Empire colonists termed their home country.

Dickens gave us dimension. Context for parents and earlier lineage. From the dreadful lives and livings in words and characters to the bright lights in movie portrayals.

Splendid stuff.

Yes, novelist supreme, essential infill and the more likely history-making than other recorded ways and means.
